Maurice Chabas

(French , 1862-1947)

In the 1890s, Maurice Chabas rejected the strict tenets of French Academic painting--emphasis on draftsmanship, complex modeling of forms, and narrative story-- and embraced the poetic and mystical school of the Symbolists. The pictures produced by Symbolist painters rejected clearly discernible narratives in favor of individual subjective understanding.
